Stockholm; at first glance, it might appear as all those stereotypes are real; The locals are really beautiful, the picture perfect houses and the sky high prices. But like most stereotypes, you'll find there's a lot more than meets the eye if you're willing to take the time and really dig deep. The locals are indeed gorgeous - but they are also very diverse. The city is gorgeous too - and there's diversity there as well in architecture and style. And those prices? Well, with a bit of hard work you CAN make your kronas go farther! Here's how I get great value in Stockholm.
Stock up on the Stockholm Card. I know these cards exist in most city and I usually belong in the bunch of people to lazy to give them a second glance. However, this incredibly comprehensive card pretty much includes every museum in the city, big or small, major attractions and also makes you ride on all the buses, trains and trams in the city.
A tip; the pass is good for 24 hours so depending on your timing you could use it for two days.
Step aside, taxis! It's transit's turn to shine! Take it from someone who has traveled quite a bit, no one can beat Stockholm in terms of clean, comfortable and comprehensive public transit. Individual rides can be quite expensive, but again, if you are using the Stockholm card you'll have unlimited access, or you can buy a daily pass.
'Free in Stockholm' and the parks. There is a website called www.gratisistockholm.nu (free in Stockholm) that lists daily free activities going on all over the city, things like stand up comedy or free food tastings or tours. Always worth keeping an eye on. And if you visit during the summer, most of these thing will occur in the parks. During June, July and August there is a wide range of free fun things to do. The gyms offer group classes, the park theatre put up shows and of course, the open air cinemas. All free.
Get our of Gamla Stan for dinner. Gamla Stan - The old town - really is a charming as they say. But it's also ground zero for Stockholms most expensive bars and restaurants along with exclusive Östermalm. To get a larger plate for you buck leave the old town behind and explore some of the other islands. Vasastan has a lovely selection of pubs, bars and restaurants that won't cost you your left arm and if you're looking for good place to have lunch head to Hornstulls Strand where all the food trucks gather every Sunday during the summer.
